Clammer towed to port in lengthy operation

Fri Feb 23 11:20:45 CET 2018 Timsen

The Kirkwall Lifeboat had a lengthy callout in the night of Feb 21, 2018, when it went to the aid of the "Georgia Dawn - INS 140" which had suffered a fouled propeller, disabling the steering of the vessel. The Kirkwall RNLI was alerted at 7.15 p.m. by the Shetland Coastguard who requested the launch of the lifeboat to head for clammer which was in a position some 30 miles north-east of Duncansby Head. Once on scene the lifeboat quickly established a tow, however, after about 20 minutes it parted due to the vessel having no control over her steering, with the boat veering port to starboard constantly. Another tow was quickly established and this held until the vessels were in between Mull Head, Deerness, and Rerwick Head in Tankerness, when it parted again. The lifeboat crew once again quickly re-established a new tow and the vessels carried on to Kirkwall, arriving at 5.30 a.m. on Feb 22. The fishing boat left Kirkwall later in the day once the obstruction had been cleared from the propeller by a local dive team. The lifeboat was back on station, refueled, and ready for service at 6.15 a.m. Report with photo: https://www.orcadian.co.uk/clam-boat-rescued-kirkwall-lifeboat/

Medevac off Whitby

Wed Apr 19 17:38:34 CEST 2017 Timsen

The Whitby Lifeboat was launched in the morning of Apr 18, 2017, after a crew member of the "Georgia Dawn" became ill and required assistance. The lifeboat was called around 8.45 a.m. to the vessel which was 10 miles off the coast of Whitby. However, the seas were too rough for the lifeboat to get the casualty on board, so the Coastguard helicopter was called. The man had suffered an epileptic fit and was airlifted to James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough.

GEORGIA DAWN INS140 9324904

Sat Jan 15 17:37:34 CET 2011 Timsen

Wick RNLI Lifeboat went to the aid of the "Georgia Dawn" after the vessel got into difficulties on Jan 11, 2011, some 10 miles east of Wick after fouling its propeller with a floating discarded fishing net, causing the engines to stall. The lifeboat was launched at 9.15 a.m. arriving on scene around 30 minutes later and took the fishing boat on tow back to Wick Harbour, where both vessels arrived safely at 12.30p.m. Divers cleared the net from the vessel's propeller and the boat was then ready for sea again.
