Search for missing crew aborted

On March 3 the Japan Coast Guard has terminated the SAR operations for the missing crew of the 'Guo Xing 1', as there were no new clues found since they started on March 1. Local authorities were continuing to conduct daily patrols in the area where the vessel sank. Five Vietnamese, seven Chinese and one Filipino seafarer remained missing. Only one crew member was rescued and was to be repatriated to Vietnam soon.

The 'Guo Xing 1' sank 12 kilometers east of the port of Tomari in the Aomori Prefecture, northeast Honshu, on Feb 29 around 1 p.m. in the Pacific following the collision with the purse seiner 'Tomi Maru No. 8', 138 gt (IMO: 9067037) . The cargo ship which was enroute from Hachinohe to Pyongtaek with a cargo of 3.150 tons scrap and suffered a breach at starboard side with severe water ingress so that it sank in a very short time. At the time of the accident, the weater was windy and the waves were about 2.5 meters, high. On board the freighter were 14 crew members, including six Vietnamese, seven Chinese and one Filipino, aged 24 to 52. Only one sailor, the 34-year-old Vietnamese national Nguyên Van Hai from Hai Phong, survived after being rescued by a nearby boat. The others were still missing. Hai was in good condition and the embassy worked with Japanese authorities to secure his repatriation. The five missing Vietnamese were are Nguyên Van Thao, 30, from Nghê An; Ho Quang Tho, 40, from Binh Dinh; Nguyên Viêt Khanh, 30, Nguyên Van Truong, 28, and Phan Hong Quân, 29, from Hai Phong. The Japanese Coast Guard has sent patrol boats to the site to search for the missing. The fishing vessel suffered a large hole in the bow above the water line, but was stable.14 of the 15 crew of the purse seiner from Hachinohe were unharmed, one 74 year old fisherman suffered slight injuries. The vessel returned to Hachinohe Port on the morning of March 1, and the authorities started interrogating the crew. The Transportation Safety Commission dispatched two marine accident investigators to the site. The SAR operation was continued with patrol boats and aircraft from of the 21st Aviation Group of the JMSDF in Tateyama City, Chiba Prefecture. Rescue teams were also mobilized from Otaru, Yokohama and Kobe. Chinese and Korean freighters collide off Pyeongtaek (Korea), 2 crew missing

General cargo vessel Guo Xing 1 collided with unidentified Korean cargo vessel off Pyeongtaek, Korea, Yellow sea, at 2200 LT Aug 20. It is understood, that both vessels suffered serious damages, one of the freighters probably sank. Two crew of reportedly, Korean freighter, went missing. Guo Xing 1 was en route from Incheon to China.
