Sand carrier sank after collision - four men missing
The tank m/v "Zi Yun 1" was in collision with the "Guoliang 399" off Zhoushan on Nov 22, 2015, at 6.30 p.m. The "Zi Yun 1" was overtaking the other ship when collision occurred due to the strong the currents and hydrodynamic pressure caused collision. The "Guoliang 399" suffered a large hole on starboard side below the waterline, suffered water ingress and capsized. The crew was not able to abandon the vessel, and most of the crew members jumped into the water. The local authorities and nearby fishermen start an SAR operation and found four men. They had suffered severe injuries and were transported to the local hospital. Another four crew members were still missing. Large part from the sand on board of the "Guoliang 399" spilled into the water but not cause any pollution. However, the local authorities dispatched anti pollution boats to the scene to monitor the water for any gasoil leaks. The product tanker also suffered sufficient damages, but remained afloat. The ship was sailing in ballast. The local authorities detained the tanker for further investigations.
