One million compensation paid to relatives

Singapore’s Ocean Sentinels Ship Management has handed over around one million $ as compensation to Myanmar seafarers and families involved in the "Harita Bauxite" sinking in the night of Feb 16, 2013, in which 15 people perished in Philippine waters on its way to China from Indonesia. The ship sank due to engine troubles caused by bad weather.

Oil spill reached Bolinao

The "Harita Bauxite" continues to leak oil and the spill has reached the coastal villages of Bolinao. The Provincial Disaster Risk and Reduction Management Council (PDRRMC) confirmed reports that the slick was discovered in the fishing villages of Binabalian and Dewey in Bolinao town during the recent days. Officials said the current may have shifted the slick back to Bolinao shores. The slick was confined to a 600 meter-radius in Binabalian while the slick covered a lesser area in Dewey. The slick was said to be under control and cleanup operations were ongoing. There was no need to declare the town under a calamity state as the spill affected less than 20 percent of the town’s population and less than 40 percent of its livelihood.

Philippinie Coastguard continues oil spill response

The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) on Mar 4 continued its effort in containing the oil spill of the "Harita Bauxite" that affected at least 11 areas in the northern part of the country. Based on the laboratory test conducted on the water samples taken from the 11 eleven areas and the sample from the area in Bolinao where the "Harita Bauxite" sank, the result appeared that those samples technically were all identical. The Philippine Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM) was also waiting for the result of other tests which were commissioned by several local government units mostly in La Union and Ilocos Norte that were affected by the said oil spill incident.
