Anti pollution ship tasked to sinking site off Scandola Reserve

The CROSS Corsen was alerted in the evening of Nov 6, 2022, after a 20-meter yacht with three people on board suffered a significant water ingress off the Scandola reserve. The lifeboat of the SNSM station Calvi Balagne was tasked to assist and got in in contact with the castaways at around 1.30 a.m. They had been able to take refuge in the semi-rigid of the yacht. It was escorted to the port of Calvi where the castaways were taken care of by the gendarmerie. On Nov 7 at 2.30 a.m. the heavily damaged yacht had sunk, and the 'Jason' was deployed to monitor the sinking site for possible pollutions. On Nov 7 it was stationary in pos. 42° 42.67' N 009° 04.32' E.

Assistance to blazing motor yacht off Bandol

On Oct 12, 2022, the CROSS Med was alerted after a motor yacht caught fire shortly after 10 a.m about 3.7 nautical miles off Bandol. The Dauphin “Guepard Victor” helicopter of the French Navy, the lifeboat 'SNS 164-Saint Elme II' and the semi-rigid 'SNS 7-009-Timothy' of the SNSM station in Bandol were deployed to the scene. Upon broadcasting a Mayday Relay, also the customs boat 'DF 63-Arenc', the yacht 'Macif 32' and another yachtsman in the area responded. 15 minutes after the initial distress call, The two crew members of the burning yacht, aged 68 and 76, were forced to jump into the water with a simple buoy and without the life jackets that had become inaccessible because of the fire, now out of control. They were quickly picked up by the yachtsman in the area before being transferred aboard the 'SNS 164' for an assessment. As they were suffering from smoke poisoning, it was decided to medevac them by helicopter to the Sainte Anne army training hospital where they were taken care of. In order to deal with the ship still on fire, the BSAA 'Jason' was also tasked to assist and arrived shortly after 11 a.m. The fire was too large to be extinguished, and the vessel sank shortly afterwards. The 'Jason' remained in the area in order to be ready to intervene against any pollution. After recovering the macro-waste on the surface, a slight iridescence was observed near the site of the accident, which dissipated without requiring the intervention of pollution control resources. Around 4:30 p.m. no more pollution being visible, and the 'Jason' returned to Toulon.
