Judge ordered sale of abandoned dredger
The Bombay High Court has ordered sale of the "Kamal 36", owned by the government of Ukraine and abandoned off the Mumbai coast, following a suit filed by its crew members for recovery of dues. The vessel which is practically unattended could not be allowed to remain in its present condition and has exposed the port itself to danger. The imminent danger to the life of two crew members on board of the vessel as also to the port itself called for urgent intervention by the court. The judge said the court had earlier given the Ukrainian government an option to take the ship away but it did not react. The "Kamal 36" has been chartered by a Gujarat-based company Jaisu Shipping. and is owned by Black Sea and Azov Sea Dredging Company (CHAMP), which is an enterprise of the State of Ukraine. Its representative urged the court not to allow the sale of the ship as he contended that the Gujarat-based charterer should take care of the vessel. Bharat Singh, 2nd officer of the "Kamal 36", who filed the admiralty suit, urged the High Court that the Mumbai Sheriff may be directed to sell the vessel and recover dues of the stranded crew members.

The Bombay High Court on July 12 13 ordered the Directorate General of Shipping to distribute Rs 175,000 ($ 3,000) among the captains of three stranded ships to ensure minimum provisions to crew members abandoned by a Gujarat-based Jaisu Shipping Company. Seven ships belonging to the financially-troubled Jaisu Shipping Company are stranded about two nautical miles from the Mumbai harbour since April, when the company stopped sending supplies. The court directed the Mumbai Port Trust - charterers of the ships - to provide fuel, lubricants and fresh water to each ship by July 13. The dredging vessels stuck around Mumbai harbour are Kamal 35, Kamal 33, Kamal 29, Kamal 26, Kamal 36 (XXXVI), Kamal 46, Sulawesi 2. The court has also directed authorities to arrange for repatriation of crew members who have been signed off. The crews consist of Indian and Ukranian citizens. Mumbai Mirror
