Owner looking for lost barge
The "Karen Jean" sank off Point Judith, Rhode Island. The tug was pushing a 110 foot long barge with a cargo of crane parts when it developed a list due to bad weather. A Nor’easter had developed with eight foot waves and wind gusts reaching 40 knots. The tug list worsened and suffered water ingress. The Coast Guard Cutter "Sanibel" from Woods Hole, Massachusetts; the cutter "Tiger Shark" from Newport, Rhode Island, the "Sitkinak" from Bayonne, New Jersey, and the CG Station Point Judith responded to the case. The vessel quickly began to sink within 30 miinutes only allowing enough time for the crew of four to send out a distress call and abandon ship into a life raft. Without survival suits, the crew held onto the life raft when the nearby fishing vessel "Merit" came to their aid. No reports of injuries to the crew. The "Karen Jean" sank in 88 feet of water with its towline still attached. The owners will dispatch another tug to the scene to recover the barge.
Four Rescued After Tugboat Sinks Off Rhode Island
A 55-foot tugboat towing an empty barge capsized and sank Wednesday night (Oct. 22) off of Point Judith, Rhode Island. All four people aboard the tug were rescued from the water by a nearby fishing boat. The incident was reported to the Coast Guard at approximately 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. It is unclear from reports if the barge had broken away from the tug and was adrift or if it was still tethered to the tug, which sank in about 88 feet of water. Winds at the time of the incident were reported to be 20 to 25 knots with gusts up to 40 knots. Salvors were expected to re-asses the situation Thursday after the weather subsided.
