Cigarette caused cargo fire
Hay stored in one of the trucks on board of the "Mesudiye" ignited on July 19, 2016, at 7.30 p.m. The flames spread to other trucks. The ferry was en route from Lapseki to Gelibolu in the Dardanelles. The fire caused development of dense smoke, and passengers panicked. The ship docked at the ferry terminal in Geliboglu, where the passengers were disembarked and the tugs "Söndüren 7" and "Kurtarma 9" attended with fire fighting equipment, lifeboats and fire engines were deployed in fire fighting. The fire was extinguished, and the ship did not suffer serious damages. The fire was allegedly caused by a discarded cigarette which landed on the hay trailer.
