Maldives has received $10 million as compensation

Mon Dec 06 21:16:55 CET 2021 Timsen

he MMaldives has received $10 million as compensation from the company of the 'Navios Amaryllis' after its grounding on the Rasfari reef in the Kaafu Atoll on Aug 19. Investigations by the Environment Protection Agency revealed that the grounding had occurred because the engine had been shut down due to overheating and negligence by the master.

Damage to reef after grounding assessed

Thu Sep 30 09:35:33 CEST 2021 Timsen

On Sep 26, the Director General of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) reported that they have assessed the damages caused by the grounding of the Navios Amaryllis' and have calculated a fine to impose on the vessel. The amount was not disclosed. The joint survey conducted by Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and EPA to ascertain the damages was concluded last week. It took a month to finish the survey due to high surge waves, which had lead to difficult diving conditions. The incident damaged a hectar of the protected area, including various types of corals such as sizeable brain corals and branch corals. It was estimated it would take around ten years for the reef to recover from the damages it suffered. The damages will be calculated as per the regulation under the Environment Protection Act that determines cost of damages in incidents like this. The most any party can be fined for damaging vulnerable area is MVR 100 million (USD 6,474,187). Additionally, EPA could sue for financial compensation for the damages as well. Any fine will have to be paid within a 30-day period. The vessel was still moored in Maldives waters in pos. 04° 17.05' N 073° 31.17' E. It can only be released after the fine has been paid.

Owners wish departure of bulk carrier to Panama

Fri Sep 03 10:47:37 CEST 2021 Timsen

The 'Navios Amaryllys' wishes to depart from the Maldives. The vessel, which was successfully refloated on August 29, remained detained as of Sep 3. The vessel's owners have been given the option to pay a deposit of MVR 100 million, which would allow the vessel to depart from the Maldives before the investigation has been concluded. The incident was still being investigated. The vessel's owners have informed the Transport Ministry that they wished for the vessel to set sail for Panama, where it will undergo repairs of the grounding damages. The owners have not discussed the deposit payment with the EPA to date.
