The cargo m/v "Syria Star“was reeleased on Aug Aug 8, 2010. The German fregate "Schleswig-Holstein“ sent a boarding team which medically treated the crew of 20 Syrians 2 Egypts after the pirates had fled with a life boat of the vessel during the night and the crew had asked for help via VHF. The ship was bound for the Sudan with a cargo of sugar.

After the mayday of the "Syria Star", helicopters were immediately dispatched to the vessel and tried to establish communications with the vessel, which had stopped in the water. They found an abandoned skiff nearby, containing fuel and ammunition. When warships arrived on the scene shortly after, the "Syria Star" had reversed course and was heading South East back towards the Horn of Africa under the control of the pirates, who refused to respond to radio contact.
