Owners of capsized barge instructed to remove wreck
The southern region Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) has instructed the owners of the "Ocean Line 208" which is still overturned off Tanjung Punggai in Kota Tinggi to salvage the vessel immediately. The owners have been directed to start salvaging works on their vessel to clear the waterways. The salvaging works should start as soon as possible as MMEA and all related agencies have stopped the search and rescue (SAR) operations. The ill-fated barge was located about 1,2 nautical miles from Tanjung Punggai, since having been towed closer to the shoreline for the SAR operations on May 21. The agency would continue to monitor the salvaging efforts for potential bodies of the missing crew members. SAR operation at capsized dredger called off
The SAR effort, tasked with the recovery of bodies from the overturned "Ocean Line 208" in Tanjung Punggai has been called off by the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), as the lead agency, on May 26 at 2.30 p.m. The latest body recovered was on May 25 at 12.25 p.m. by fisherman at about two nautical miles from Pulau Pemanggil and about 65 nautical miles from the location of incident last week. On the whole four bodies of Chinese nationals and a sole Malaysian have been recovered since the operations began on May 20. Nine other bodies of the seamen have yet to be accounted for. There was only one survivor. The decision to end the SAR operations was made after discussions with all participating agencies. The last SAR operations included patrols in the waters off Tanjung Punggai and also diving recovery efforts of the vessel’s hull. The SAR operations would continue if there were new leads. The joint SAR team consisted of the MMEA, marine police, Malaysian Navy and the Marine Department. The team was faced with rough sea conditions, making the recovery process by divers difficult.
Four bodies recovered
Four bodies have been recovered so far from the "Oceanline 208". The search for the 14 sailors missing from the barge has been ongoing since the vessel capsized on May 20. The bodies of one Malaysian man and two Chinese men were discovered Friday and over the weekend. A fourth body, that of another Chinese crewman, was recovered on May 25 at 11:00 a.m. The bodies have been brought to the Marina Jetty at Tanjung Pengelih for additional investigation. The SAR operation has been hampered by rough sea conditions over the weekend and into MAy 25. The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) called off diving operations around 3:30 p.m. due to strong currents. The operation was carried out by one ship, four boats and a total of 28 rescue divers. Ten crewmembers still remained unaccounted for.
