No operation to salvage reefer
The "Ping Da 7" remains stuck on Pohnpei reef where it ran aground in early December 2013 and started leaking oil. A lack of co-operation between the owner of the ship and the authorities has delayed its removal. The owner said he did not have money to remove the ship. The oil spill has since been contained but a Presidential declaration has warned that the ship posed a substantial environmental threat. It was expected the ship would remain on the reef for some time due to limited abilities of the authorities to move it. There was to be a civil case that would be carried out in the Federation of Micronesia supreme court and it was hoped that something could be settled over there. Right now, there were no operations. Fear of spill risk from grounded vessel
Officials from the Federated States of Micronesia were working to move the "Ping Da 7" off a reef off the capital of Pohnpei, after the government declared it a substantial environment and health risk. The vessel became stuck on the reef on Dec 11, 2013, and was carrying substantial amounts of dangerous fuels, gas and chemicals. A task was able to pump and contain an oil leak last week and made a call for assistance to tug operators in the region, as their tug were too small and high tides were drawing the vessel further onto the reef. Potential tug operators can come in and help to remove first the fuel and also possibly the wreck off the reef. The Hong Kong based owner was contacted and said he did not have the funds to remove it.
Tug sent to refloat grounded reefer
A tug from the Marshall Islands was sailing to Pohnpei in the Federated Stataes of Micronesia to try to refloat the "Ping Da 7" which ran aground on Dec 11, 2013. on the Pohnpei Barrier Reef. Meanwhile high seas since have driven it further onto the reef. The Conservation Society of Pohnpei was unable to move the ship and a team of assessors has been unable to complete a damage report on the reef.
