Tug sank on Hudson River
On June 30, 2016, at 12:04 p.m. rescuers from Rockland were notified that the “Potomac” was taking on water in the Hudson River near the Tappan Zee Bridge construction site. Nyack volunteer firefighters responded first in a fire boat. Members of the Piermont dive team also responded as did the Rockland County Sheriff’s Department. The tug was submerged in nine-feet of water. Two crew members had safely evacuated by the time rescuers arrived. No one was hurt. It is unclear what caused the ship to sink. It was carrying up to 1,500 gallons of fuel. It did not immediately appear that any of the fuel leaked into the river. Later the water was drained from the ship and it was moored at a barge, while the Coast Guard is investigating the cause of the mishap. The Coast Guard was also looking into potential pollution in the water and analyzing safety concerns in the area.
