Samskip Akrafell may be sold for scrap
General avegage was declared by the insurance companies of all stakeholders on Sep 12. That means the organization of farm owners are jointly liable for the costs of the rescue of the values which were aboard the "Samskip Akrefjell". The final amount will not end all claims for payment of a reward. The case will be processed through the insurance companies concerned. The evaluation process has been running after declaring General Average and assesses the value of the salvaged both of cargo and ship. It was xpected that the process would take several weeks. Aboard the cargo ship were frozen seafood and general exports, such as dry products. The Operators hired another ship, the "Horst B", to receive the shipment. The ship sailed from REykjavik on Sep 15 and it was expected to Reydarfjördur on Sep 19. Later the same day the ship was to sail to the Faroe Islands and from there to the UK and the Netherlands. The crew of 13 of the casualty vessel was still in Iceland. They were all foreign nationals.from the Philippines and Eastern Europe, including Ukraine and Lithuania. The captain who was indicted for violation of maritime law. His case ended on Sep 13 with penalty decision but he agreed with the District Court of East to pay a fine of 700,000 Crowns for falling asleep at the helm. Samskip could possibly sell the vessel for scrap. The bottom was heavily damaged and the engine room flooded. It would need a lot of steel to repair the ship. It was uncertain whether it paid off the final costs.
Samskip Aklrafell sealed and towed from Eskifirði to Reyðarfjordur
The investigation of the police Eskifirði regarding the grounding of the "Samskip Akrafell" ended last week, and the chief mate who fell asleep at the helm was charged with violation of Article 238 of the Maritime Law. He appeared before a judge on Sep 12 and agreed to pay a penalty of 700,000 crowns fine. The matter was now closed by the police. It was still unclear when the "Samskip Akrafell" which was significantly damaged would be sailing again. The freighter was pulled from Eskifirði to Reyðarfjordur in the morning of Sep 13 by the tug "Birni Lóðs" from Höfn ín Hornafirði og and the pilot boat "Fjarðarbyggðar Vötti". All cargo that was aboard was unloaded over the weekend. The vessel had various goods aboard, including frozen seafood. It was not clear whether the cargo was damaged while farm owners have requested the opportunity to examine the cargo. The "Samskip Akrafell" was now tied to the dock at the Búðareyri plant while a damage assessment was started. Thip will remain in Búðareyri until a decision regarding the further proceedings has been taken.
