Maersk to scrap 8 old 4,360-TEU Sea Land ships in India and China

The world's biggest shipping company, Denmark's Maersk Line, said it will scrap one per cent of its fleet when its recycles eight 4,360-TEUers now deployed on its TP10 and TP18 services, reports American Shipper. The panamax ships are the Sea Land Lightning, Sea Land Charger, Sea Land Intrepid, Sea Land Comet, Sea Land Eagle, Sea Land Racer, Sea Land Meteor and Sea Land Mercury. "This is a small but meaningful capacity reduction, which will contribute to achieving a better balance between supply and demand for Maersk Line," said Maersk Line chief operating officer Sven Toft. Maersk said it expects to scrap more vessels than in previous years as more near their end of economic life. Four will be scrapped in India, four in China.

Vaporized water caused fire alarm

Because a fire was reported on the "Sealand Mercury" on Oct 5, 2012, at noon at the Strom Quay in Bremerhaven, the Fire Department Bremerhaven and the Fire Brigade Weddewardenwere called to the container terminal. Smoke emerged from an open hatch, but there was no fire. Nevertheless, about 20 containers were brought ashore and checked with a thermal imaging camera. Some of the containers showed higher temperatures than usual and were opened. Finally it was found out that water had heated up after having got in contact with the 70 degree Celsius hot fuel tanks of the vessel heated and vaporized.
