Roro ferry sank off Safaga, all 37 on board rescued

Mon Jul 06 10:03:26 CEST 2015 Timsen

Egypt’s naval forces have rescued 37 people on board of the "Taba" 17 miles Safaga Port at the coast of the Red Sea on July 5, 2015. The ferry had left Safaga Port bound to Duba, but developed an increasing list to starboard side and started sinking after sailing 20 nautical miles away from Safaga. The ship sent a distress signal to the Safaga Naval Base at 5.05 a.m., which sent three launches which were on site within 30 minutes and rescued the castaways. At the time of the incident, the ship was carrying 37 persons, 10 of whom were drivers of 43 cargo trucks carried on board of the ship, and the remainder crew. All of the passengers were Egyptian except for a Sudanese and a Lebanese. Three crew members were injured with fractures and six others with bruises. The naval ship "Safa" took them back to Safaga. The Minister of Transport Hany Dahi formed a technical committee to investigate the incident. According to first information the "Taba" sank due to lack of balance because many of the cargo trucks on board of the ship were placed on one side instead of being distributed.
