Tanker refloated and towed to Mombasa

Wed Jul 12 21:34:36 CEST 2017 Timsen

The "Theresa Arctic" has finally been refloated, 22 days since it ran aground at Bofa beach in Kilifi. Mombasa port personnel refloated the ship in a repeat of the operations which had earlier been halted twice due to bad weather and inappropriate equipment. The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) salvage team had to put contingency measures in place to mitigate pollution risks as the local community’s water source intake was less than 200 metres from the site. The vessel was laden with 46,000 metric tonnes of vegetable oil and ran aground off Kilifi while en route from Port Keelang in Malaysia, to Mombasa on June 20. Experts suspected that the ship’s engines may have broken down in the middle of the high seas leading to its stalling. The KPA placed booms around the vessels as a precaution against potential pollution due to oil spillage. The ports agency dispatched its five tugs, the "Nyangumi", "Simba", "Comarco Prince", "Alpha Granada" and "Alpha Pina" to the site along with divers who reported that the damage was limited to a ballast tank with no risk of pollution. The refloating was successfully accomplished by combined efforts of Smit International, Alpha Logistics, Cormaco and KPA salvage teams. The tanker was berthed in Mombasa on July 12 at 2.15 p.m. Report with photo: http://www.businessdailyafrica.com/news/Oil-tanker-refloated-22-day-Kilifi-beach/539546-4012556-ytkhv0/index.html https://www.standardmedia.co.ke/business/article/2001247429/stricken-ship-finally-towed-to-mombasa

Tug deployed from Salalah to assist in salvage

Wed Jul 05 12:06:58 CEST 2017 Timsen

The tug "CSC Nelson" was deployed from Salalah to assist in refloating the "Theresa Arctic" off Kilifi and was expected to arrive on July 9. The tanker was sailing from Port Keelang in Malaysia to Mombasa when it ran aground off Kilifi on June 20 some 55 nautical miles northeast of Mombasa. The vessel was loaded with 46,000 tons of vegetable oil and 15,000 tonnes were to be transferred to another ship, the "Theresa Dumai", which anchored next to her. Efforts to refloat the vessel using the two Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) tugs "Alpha Granada" and "Alpha Kirawira" of 4.000 hp each failed due to bad weather and rough seas.
