Half tanker beached for recycling

Mon Jan 06 21:23:10 CET 2020 Timsen

On Dec 19, 2019, the foreship of the 'Therese Straub' was beached in Aliaga along with the tug which had towed it, the 'Arion' (IMO: 8136506). The convoy had sailed from Dordrecht on Oct 12 bound to Dakar. The tanker broke in two in stormy seas, so that only the foreship reached its destination. As ist was useless in this condition, it was sold to Turkish breakers subsequently. The aft had been towed to Brest following the shipwreck.

Rear part of split tanker towed to Brest - Moldavian tug did not remark loss

Thu Oct 17 14:17:25 CEST 2019 Timsen

The rear part of the 'Thérèse Straub' which had a length of 70 meters was pulled into the port of Brest on Oct 16 at 3:50 p.m. by the 'Abeille Bourbon'. The port tugs 'Clairvoyant' and 'Robuste' took over and with the help of the mooring boats, the ship section was berthed at Karl's side at the west pier of the fifth basin. The owner of the tug 'Arion' who is responsible for his cargo, will be contacted to know what he wants to do. Most likely the stern section will be a broken up. The tank barge had sailed from S Gravendeel and broke in two being towed by the Polish tug 'Arion' (IMO: 8136506) of the company Zaklad Uslug Zeglugowych (ZUZ) 30 miles NNW of Ushant. The broken-off foreship was 40 meters long and was being towed to Spain by the tug with its capacity of 2500 kW and a traction of 33.5 tons under the supervision of the French maritime authorities. The tug crew told the authorities that they had did not have noticed anything until the German container ship 'Sajir' observed the drifting stern. The final destination of the tanker was the Ivory Coast. The foreship arrived on the anchorage of Dakar on Oct 29 at 4 p.m. where the 'Arion' moored in pos. 14° 40.91' N 017° 20.00' W.
