Former Coast Guard ship being dismantled in Nanaimo
The 'W.E. Ricker' is slowly being dismantled at the Canadian Maritime Engineering Ltd., north of the Townsite Marina in Nanaimo. The process will continue through until the end of February 2022, with the vessel having weight removed from it gradually by removing deck equipment and other structures while afloat. Once the desired weight reduction is achieved, the vessel will be loaded onto the marine railway and removed from the water. It will then be stabilized in position. Woman stranded on B.C. island rescued after one week
The 62-year-old B.C. woman spent a week stranded in the Haida Gwaii, or Queen Charlotte Islands, after her common-law husband, Folkert “Fred” Wydenes, drowned. Campbell was spotted early Sunday by the operator of a fishing boat moored off Graham Island, Canada’s westernmost point, in the Haida Gwaii. The 58-metre coast guard vessel W.E. Ricker and a smaller 15-metre boat from Sandspit, on Moresby Island, were dispatched to the scene, reaching the area about five hours later, just as a coast guard helicopter set down on the beach.
