PACIFIC EXPLORER
The 'Pacific Explorer', which has run many trips out of Auckland, will be retired in February 2025, as the the P&O Cruises Australia brand will be folded into Carnival Cruises to boost guest capacity and increase operational efficiencies. Itineraries will run as normal and any guests affected by the changes will be notified in coming days. Two of P&O's ships, the 'Pacific Encounter' and the 'Pacific Adventure', will be rebranded and operated by Carnival Cruise Line.
Kiel
The inauguration of the new shore power facility in Kiel on Dec 9, 2020, meant that Stena Line now have the possibility to connect 14 vessels at seven terminals with on-shore electricity during port stay. The new connection in Kiel will reduce the CO2 emissions from the two vessels Stena Scandinavica and Stena Germanica with 2,700 tonnes per year. In total Stena Line reduce its CO2 emissions with shore power with 13,000 tonnes per year. The new shore power facility in Kiel provides 100% green electricity, thus also avoiding NOX-, SOX- and particle emissions during the port stay of the 'Stena Germanica' and 'Stena Scandinavica'. Aside from Kiel, Stena Line have the possibility to connect to shore power supply at its two terminals in Göteborg, as well as in Karlskrona, Norvik, Trelleborg and Hoek van Holland, thus saving 13,000 t of CO2 per year in its network. Of the 36 vessels in the Stena Line fleet, 14 are now equipped with High Voltage Shore Connection systems (HVSC). “Shore power supply is important for us for two reasons: First, we want to have an immediate positive impact on the air quality in the ports we use. Secondly, we expect an even higher share of electrification in ports in the future – at cars, trucks, port vehicles and not the least at ships. With our battery and power bank projects, we develop our ferry services further in that direction constantly and we learn something new each day. In 2030 we expect to launch a 100 % battery powered and fossil free vessel”, say Niclas Mårtensson, CEO Stena Line and member of the Swedish Government Elelctrification Commission. Kiels mayor Dr. Ulf Kämpfer inaugurated the new façade of the shore power facility, which has been specially designed and illuminated. The inauguration marks the offizial start of the on-shore power supply for Stena Line in Kiel. The facility was co-funded by the state government of Schleswig-Holstein (8,9 m Euro) and the EU (1,26 m Euro). In addition, Germany´s federal government recently agreed on a political package to decrease the user prices for on-shore electricity significantly. “We are very grateful for the political support on various levels. The planned decrease of user prices for shore side electricity is an important step for the competitiveness of environmentally- and climate-friendly technologies in Northern Europe. At the same time, we are very happy about the continuous positive dialogue with our partners at Port of Kiel and the city of Kiel”, says Ron Gerlach, Managing Director, Stena Line Germany.

The crane barge 'Chesapeake 1000' lifted the last large piece of the Francis Scott Key Bridge blocking the Patapsco River’s main shipping channel on the morning of June 4. The lift followed extensive operations to free the section of steel from the mudline, and marked the end of operations to cut and haul out a large section of the Key Bridge that had fallen onto the 'Dali'. The Key Bridge Response Unified Command crews were now set to use dredging buckets and a large salvage grab to pull smaller chunks of debris out of the water before reopening the full 700-foot-wide channel in and out of the Port of Baltimore. The full marine route is expected to open sometime between June 8 and June 10 after surveys to ensure no debris remains in the federal channel. Opening the main channel will mark a return to normalcy for maritime traffic into the port. A 400-foot-wide section of the main channel has allowed 24/7 cargo vessel access into the Baltimore harbor for about two weeks, opening after crews refloated the 'Dali'. Over the past several weeks, Unified Command crews have been cutting a 10-million-pound bridge segment into large pieces and lifting them out of the river using the Chesapeake 1000 crane. The large piece of steel truss, dubbed “Section 4,” is the same segment of bridge that had pinned down the 'Dali' for 55 days. The first segment, which weighed in at 140 tons, was lifted on May 24 and taken to Sparrows Point for processing. A second, 470-ton segment was lifted over the weekend, and the third and final — estimated to weigh around 400 tons — was picked up and transported on the morning of Jime 4. The final lift required approximately 200 tons of steel to be removed through smaller cuts, shaking and hammering in order to remove the larger piece from the water. The owners of the 'Lida Suzanna', which allegedly damaged an undersea fibre optics cable, stretching 219 kilometersm between Dublin at Lytham St. Anne's near Blackpool, and providing internet and telephone connection between Ireland and Britain on Jan 26, 2015, were being sued in the High Court over the €800,000 cost of repairs by the Virgin Media Wholesale Ltd. The vessel was allegedly involved in scallop fishing which involves dredging the seabed. Virgin, which has registered offices in Hampshire, is seeking damages and a declaration that a maritime lien. It also seeks an order for its sale if necessary. The defendants deny the vessel was responsible for causing damage to the cable and requires proof of this. It is also contended that Virgin is the author of its own misfortune by not taking sufficient measures to bury or protect its cables. Alternatively, it claims Virgin was contributorily negligent. There was also an alleged failure to protect its cables in an area of fishing ground established centuries past. The defendants said they were doing nothing more than the lawful exploitation of fishing rights and Virgin has no entitlement to expect or demand that fishing be modified, or stopped by reason of the laying of its cable. The cable was installed in 1998 by Virgin's predecessor NTL. It is one of two cables, the Sirius South and the Sirius North, running between Ireland and Britain and if one is damaged, Virgin can switch to the other. There have been 18 instances of damage involving trawlers since it was installed. Opening the case on behalf of Virgin on June 4, 2024, Edward Farrelly SC said it was their case that the defendants should have been or ought to have been aware of the location of the cable which is marked on industry-recognised charts and Ireland's Marine Atlas. Merchant shipping regulations place a statutory duty on the vessel to carry publications which would have alerted it to the location of the cable. It is further alleged there was a failure to ensure the skipper and/or crew were adequately aware of and/or educated about the location of subsea cables. The case continues before Mr Justice Denis McDonald.

the night of Jnne 3, 2024, two migrant boats were reported in difficulty off the coast of Calais. In the middle of the night, the CROSS Gris-Nez was notified that a migrant boat had sauled from the Blériot beach. The CROSS diverted an air craft for on-site reconnaissance. At the same time, the lifeboat 'Notre Dame du Risban-SNS 077' was launched from Calais and the mine hunter 'Thétis' also headed to the positon. The lifeboat crew indicated that 18 people requested assistance. They were taken on board and then dropped off at the port of Calais. The 'Thétis' was monitoring the situation on board the migrant boat. An hour later, the 36 other people still on board also requested assistance, as their engine had broken down again. They were rescued by the vessel, which headed towards Calais to drop them off at the dock. While en route, the 'Thétis' reported to the CROSS that a second boat seemed to be in difficulty off the coast of Calais. The CROSS re-engaged the 'Thétis' and deployed the 'Abeille Normandie' to come and take over. At dawn, the emergency tug arrived near this second boat and rescued eight people. The other people on board refused the assistance offered. The choice was made to let them continue on their way. The Abeille Normandie headed to the port of Boulogne, where the eight castaways were dropped off.
