Athena'slast voyage

Mon Jul 25 10:50:50 CEST 2011 Timsen

The gutted "Athena" is being towed to Esbjerg where it will probably be broken up. The factory trawler had just been repaired after a previous fire when another fire broke out in May. Despite the efforts from firefighters and the two Faroese guarding vessels "Brimel" and "Tjaldrid" the fire spread throughout the ship. The fire was the third on board. The first fire was six years ago, on July 7, 200,5 when the trawler almost burned out. It happened just two months after her sister ship "Hercules" was lost after a major fire. The second time was in October 2010, when the trawler caught fire in the Atlantic, and the third time was in May 2011. On July 22 the "Athena" was taken in tow by tugs of the salvage company Svitzer and is now heading towards Esbjerg. Photos: http://aktuelt.fo/grein/athena_sleipad_av_landinum

ATHENA 8907096

Mon May 09 21:32:12 CEST 2011 Timsen

Toxic fumes and the danger of explosion prompted police to evacuate residents from Runavik in the night of May 9. 1500 people have been evacuated from their homes in the Faroese village following the fierce fire on "Athena". It is yet unknown why the fire broke out around midnight local time. AIt started at the bow and quickly spread. The fire rescue tried in vain to extinguish the fire from the quarterdeck, but there was so much heat development and small explosions that it was unsafe to continue the inguishing work. The firefighters had to retreat and tried to limit the damage. There were only three crew members aboard who were flown by helicopter to hospital. Police expected that the evacuees could return home to their houses during the afternoon. The fire will probably only be extinguished within a few days.
