New Khareef Class Corvette Enters Service with the Royal Omani Navy

Fri Oct 18 07:06:35 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The Royal Navy of Oman (RNO) has recently accepted a new corvette – AL SHAMIKH – the lead ship of Khareef class. The 99 meter corvette has a displacement of 2,660 ton. It was constructed by BAE Systems at Portsmouth, UK and is designated ‘Ocean Patrol Vessel’ (OPV). AL SHAMIKH was launched in 2009 and accepted by the Royal Oman Navy in the UK June this year. Work at Portsmouth continues on the other two vessels of the class – AL RAHMANI and AL RAKISH.

Explosion on Omani warship injures three

Mon Mar 19 07:26:44 CET 2012 arnekiel

Three sailors were taken to hospital after an explosion aboard an Omani warship off the Dorset coast, it emerged yesterday. It is believed that during a gun firing operation several sailors received injuries in the incident, which occurred during a pre-delivery testing operation at sea. Sailors from the Al Shamikh warship, which has been undergoing sea trials in the English Channel, were taken to the Dorset County Hospital in nearby Dorchester. The crew are made up of Omani sailors and BAE employees, who were taking the Al Shamikh through its paces before the 99-metre long ship was due to be handed over to the Sultanate of Oman Navy later in the year. South West Ambulance Service Trust was called to Portland Port at Castletown, Portland, after the incident took place. A spokesman for the service said: "We received a call regarding an incident that took place on a ship. "There were three male casualties, who were taken to Dorset County Hospital, and a number of walking wounded who suffered minor injuries," he added. http://www.dorchesterpeople.co.uk/Explosion-Omani-ship-injures/story-15542811-detail/story.html
