Rescued crew taken to Trepassey

Mon Feb 24 11:17:06 CET 2014 Timsen

The crew of the "Cape Dorset" arrived in Trepassey in the night of Feb 23. When the vessel sank off the Burin Peninsula after water ingress on Feb 22 at 9 a.m., all 19 crew members from various communities throughout the province and some from Nova Scotia made it safely onto a life raft before the ship foundered at 2.45 p.m. south of the Burin Peninsula in normal weather conditions. After the f/v "Ivy Rose" responded to the distress call and picked up the crew, the Canadian Coast Guard which had planned to intercept with the "George R. Pearkes" and transport the crew to shore, instead escorted the "Ivy Rose" which docked shortly after 1:30 a.m.

Trawler sank off Burin Peninsula, 19 saved

Sat Feb 22 22:44:01 CET 2014 Timsen

The "Cape Dorset" sank in the morning of Feb 22, 2014, off the Burin Peninsula in Newfoundland. The crew sent out a distress call in the early morning when the ship began taking on water and developed a list to port before foundering stern first. Another vessel in the area, the "Ivy Rose", picked up the distress call and got the 19 crew on board before the trawler sank. A Cormorant from Gander, a Hercules from Greenwood and a plane from Provincial Airlines were involved in the SAR operation. It was planned that the "Ivy Rose" would rendezvous with the "George R. Pearkes" of the Coast Guard to transfer the crew. Later it became more likely the rescued crew would stay aboard the "Ivy Rose", which was being escorted toward Trepassey on the southeast tip of the Avalon Peninsula. The weather conditions would decide whether the ship will dock in Trepassey, or be forced on to St. John's. The ship was not expected to arrive until after midnight. Distressed fishing vessel towed to St. John's

Fri Feb 01 23:38:04 CET 2013 Timsen

In the night of Feb 1, 2013, a supply vessel being used by Husky — the "Maersk Chancellor", which was en route back to St. John’s was tasked by the Canadian Coastguard to help the "Cape Dorset" which was in distres about 75 kilometres from St. John’s. The f/v was taken in tow, and the two ships headed back to St. John’s harbour and arrived in port at 9.40 p.m.
