Inquiry opened into grounding accident

Wed May 19 11:51:14 CEST 2021 Timsen

The Karnataka Revenue Minister R. Ashok has ordered a statutory inquiry by the Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner to go into the details of the grounding of the 'Coromondel Supporter IX'. The inquiry will look into the reasons for its drifting, why the crew did not obey orders from statutory authorities to sail to safer places, and who was responsible for the accident. Based on the inquiry report, suitable action will be initiated against the concerned. About 20 tons of diesel were in the tanks when the tug grounded on the Mulki Rocks and has been ordered to be removed immediately to avoid an environmental pollution.

Tug grounded in cyclone, crew rescued

Mon May 17 10:24:06 CEST 2021 Timsen

Indian Navy helicopters were deployed to airlift the crew from the 'Coromandel Supporter IX' about six kilometers off Kaup coast in the Udupi district, after the that had run aground at the Mulki Rocks in the Cyclone Tauktae. While speedboats of Indian Coast Guard Ship Varaha rescued five crew members, a helicopter of the Navy base in Goa hoisted the other four. All nine were taken to hospitals for treatment and examination. The vessel’s contract with Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd. (MRPL) had ended in December 2020. The ship had been waiting at the outer anchorage since May 5 for instructions from the owner.
