First tanker with Iranian fuel docked in El Palito

Mon May 25 12:42:22 CEST 2020 Timsen

Five tankers carrying Iranian fuel heading to Venezuela amid rising tensions over a possible US move to halt delivery. The first of five Iranian vessels, the 'Fortune', entered El Plaito Port on May 25, 2020, encountering no immediate signs of US interference amid a diplomatic standoff. Amid heightened tensions over what Venezuelan authorities described as threats from the United States, the vessel officially entered Venezuela's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) on May 23 at about 7:30 p.m. The Bolivarian Armed Forces escorted the ship to Puorto Cabello. The other four ships - the 'Forest', 'Petunia', 'Faxon' and 'Clavel' - were expected to arrive in the coming days. The shipments have caused a diplomatic standoff between the US, Iran and Venezuela, which are both under harsh US economic sanctions. Washington was reportedly considering measures in response.
