US Coast Guard detains freighter at Port of Longview over safety concerns

Sat Aug 03 08:12:25 CEST 2013 arnekiel

The Coast Guard has detained a 553-foot freighter at the Port of Longview after discovering that it had numerous safety violations that posed significant fire danger, the agency announced Friday, August 02, 2013. Coast Guard spokesperson Nate Littlejohn said Coast Guard inspectors discovered the problems aboard the Hong Kong-flagged ship Great Success while conducting routine inspections in Kalama on Monday and Longview on Tuesday. The inspectors Tuesday ordered the vessel to remain at anchor in Longview until the ship’s crew have addressed the violations, Littlejohn said. Port of Longview spokesperson Ashley Helenberg confirmed that the ship was still berthed in Longview on Friday. Among the problems discovered were excessive oil and water in the bilges, excessive oil in the engine room, and oil-saturated insulation throughout the engine room. A leaking emergency fire pump was flooding the fire pump room, and all three generators and the boiler had active oil leaks, causing oil to pool beneath the equipment.
