Icebreaker sent to assist stranded passenger ship

On Feb 10 the icebreaker "Kapitan Khlebnikov" headed to assist the "Igor Farkhutdinov" with 127 people on board, stuck in the ice in the Sea of Okhotsk. The ship has found a spot of clean water and is staying there, the situation on board was normal. Although it cancould not not move any further, the icebreaker was already heading to rescue. It was expected to arrive this afternoon. The passenger ship with 127 people and 42 cargo containers on board, had left the Shikotan Island of the Far Eastern Kuril archipelago late on Feb 5 and headed to Sakhalin Island. However, it ran across floes of thick ice while sailing through the Nemuro Strait and was unable to continue its journey. The ship tried to navigate its way out of the ice trap on Feb 9, but failed.

Ferry with 127 passengers delayed by ice for days

The "Igor Farkhutdinov" which was carrying 127 passengers from the Kuril Islands in the northern Pacific to the Sakhalin peninsula has been stranded in ice for days off the coast of Japan. The ship also had on board 42 containers, when it encountered thick ice in the Sea of Okhotsk. The captain’s experience and a week’s worth of fuel supplies and rations to reassure that the passengers aboard the ship were not under threat. The passengers were provided with everything necessary, a decision has been made to feed them for free. The sea ice conditions could change within a day and the passenger ship could arrive at the port of Korsakov in the Sakhalin region by Feb 9, 2018.

Sakhalin authorities to suspend passenger traffic between the island and the Kuriles for two months

Regular sea passenger transportation between Sakhalin and the islands of Iturup, Kunashir and Shikotan will be discontinued for approximately two months, as the MV Igor Farkhutdinov operating on the routes will be laid up for scheduled annual dry-docking and repair. This was reported by the regional administration’s press office from a meeting with the Governor of the Sakhalin region Oleg Kozhemyako on the results his working visit to the South Kuril region.
