Replica of Swedish tall ship hosts floating classroom

Sat Aug 13 12:15:47 CEST 2016 arnekiel

The Kalmar Nyckel was the boat that helped the Swedish establish Delaware, landing in Wilmington in 1637. The ship was there during the progression of Delaware. The original Kalmar Nyckel has long since vanished, but there is a new Kalmar Nyckel. This one isn't being used to settle lands, though. Rather, this ship is helping educate Delaware students. "Our mission is education," said Sam Heed, director of education for the Kalmar Nyckel. "We are a nonprofit education foundation with the ship being used as a platform for different educational programs." The new Kalmar Nyckel, which was built from 1995 to 1997, helps educate students and the public about history, social studies, economics and the various STEM subjects. It will be docked in Lewes from Aug. 13 until Sept. 5 at the Lewes Ferry Terminal Public Pier. Based out of Wilmington, a crew of 30 can live aboard the ship when the Kalmar Nyckel is at Lewes or other places around the mid-Atlantic education students. http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/delaware/2016/08/12/historic-swedish-ship-delaware/88447316/
