Kapitan Dranitsyn icebreaker starts operations in the Port of Pevek

Sat Jun 10 11:12:01 CEST 2017 arnekiel

FSUE Rosmorport says its icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn has started operations in the seaport of Pevek after the winter standby period due to ice motion. According to earlier reports, the Kapitan Dranitsyn icebreaker conducted overwintering in the seaport of Pevek to ensure the safe mooring of Iogan Makhamstal and Sinegorsk vessels that delivered general cargoes – materials and component parts to build a terminal – in January 2017 under icebreaker support of the FSUE “Rosmorport” icebreakers Kapitan Dranitsyn and Admiral Makarov. It is planned to deploy the Mikhail Lomonosov floating nuclear NPP at the berth.

Ice-locked ships start moving from Pevek after 5 months of captivity

Thu Jun 01 13:11:57 CEST 2017 arnekiel

The icebreaker «Kapitan Dranitsyn» in early January escorted the cargo vessels «Johan Makhmastall» and «Sinegorsk» to Pevek, the port town located on the coast of the East Siberian Sea. The voyage had dramatic consequences for the ships and their crews. With great difficulties they had made it to Pevek. But the ice conditions in the area made it impossible for them to return home. It became a very long winter in one of the world’s most remote Arctic towns. Only in late May did «Kapitan Dranitsyn» start breaking its way out of the port. According to Rosmorport, the state port development company, ice conditions in the area now allow for the movement of the ships out of the Pevek port. https://thebarentsobserver.com/en/arctic/2017/05/ice-locked-ships-start-moving-pevek-after-5-months-captivity

Russia Moves Million Ton Iceberg

Fri Oct 14 10:25:02 CEST 2016 arnekiel

Rosneft and its research partners have practiced towing icebergs, including one estimated to weigh a million tons. The tests were conducted in cooperation with the Arctic Science Center and the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute (AARI) and involved icebergs of different shapes and sizes under various weather conditions. With the help of the icebreaker Kapitan Dranitsyn and the research vessel Akademik Treshnikov, the researchers were able to turn and tow the icebergs through 90 to 180 degrees from their original path. They also managed to pull away two icebergs in a single operation. The tests were conducted in the Kara Sea and are designed to help protect marine infrastructure such as oil and gas platforms on the Arctic shelf from interaction with icebergs. Source : MAREX
