Ferry abandoned after fire
The "Dharma Kencana II" with 119 passengers, including two babies and three children, on board caught fire in the morning of Oct 29, 2017, at 4.45 a.m. in the middle of the Java Sea in position 05 04S 109 54E, while en route from Samarang Central Java to Pontianak in Western Kalimantan. All passengers abandoned ferry in life rafts. A tug and the "Basarnas" were at the site along with other commercial-, SAR and patrol ships. In the evening all passengers were rescued and taken to Kumai aboard the "Kirana I". The ferry was still ablaze. She was also carrying 46 vehicles, ranging from motorcycles, private cars, to trucks.
