Cigarette causes ferry fire

Mon Nov 06 10:09:45 CET 2023 Timsen

The 'Labobar', en route from Balikpapan to Pantoloan port, suffered a fire on deck No. 7 on Nov 3, 2023, at around 2.25 p.m. The fire allegedly came from a cigarette butt of one of the passengers that lit on a rolled garbage can, then grabbed the foam cargo on the front right deck No. 7. Wooden doors at hall A on deck No. 7, window glasses, life jacket storage boxes, two wooden copot stairs two sets, and iron door, outdoor lighting and speakers, 180 life jackets, a hydrant faucet and four garden chairs were damaged. When the 'Labobar' docked at the Pantoloan port, the KSOP of Palu Bay, Basarnas and Pelni Palu immediately carried out an inspection which showed that the vessel was still fit to continue sailing to Bitung port, provided that the safety equipment, namely the burning lifeboat, is immediately repaired and repainted after arriving at Bitung port. The ferry docked at Pantoloan port at 9.30 p.m. WITA and departed to Bitung atr 10.15 p.m.

The military in Papua has denied that an officer stabbed a civilian, leading to his death, on board a passenger ship heading from Nabire to Manokwari on Sunday. The dead man’s mother, however, claims the officer stabbed him during an argument, causing him to fall overboard. Spokesman Lt. Col. Ali Hamdan Bogra on Monday said that investigations into Chief Sgt. Hans Aru were under way in connection with the suspicious death of Derek Adii, a civilian who was traveling on the ship, Labobar. Derek’s corpse was found floating near the Sambusa seaport in Nabire. http://www.thejakartaglobe.com/home/military-denies-officer-killed-papuan-passenger/441586
