Grounding off Kolkata
The "Nicobar", which is connecting Kolkata with Port Blair, Andaman Islands, ran aground shortly after leaving Kolkata, Hooghly River, in the morning of Apr 4, 2018. The vessel was blocking the port’s channel, but could quickly be refloated and was taken back to berth. She left Kolkata again on Apr 5, resuming her interrupted trip. No damages reported.
Passengers stuck 36 hours on passenger ship after engine failure
A 36-hour ordeal for over 600 passengers, who were stranded in the Chennai port on the "Nicobar" ended in the morning of Jan 4, 2017, after officials asked the passengers to disembark from the ship and made alternate arrangements for a few of them. The vessel, originally scheduled to leave for Port Blair on Jan 2 at 7 p.m., had not departed due to technical glitches. The passengers said they were left with little information on when the journey would start as they were made to stay in the vessel. Alternative arrangement for their travel was made only after a few passengers took the risk of informing the local media in the city of their plight. First, the excuse given was a technical glitch, then they said the fan of the ship had some problem and now it is learnt that the ship has an engine problem. A few of the passengers were flown by the chartered flight of Andaman and Nicobar Islands while the rest paid for their flight charges. Most of the stranded passengers did not have any cash on them or a place to go. A ship from Visakhapatnam was arranged for them, but it would take nearly two days to arrive.
