Bridge allision on the Rhine

On Dec 19, 2011, at 5.27 p.m. the "Marcona" allided with a pillar of the Kennedy Bridge in Bonn on the Rhine at km 654 While the tug with its barges was sailing river upstream, the port side propeller suddenly was blocked by drifting flotsam drifting, causing the barges to veer to port and the barges hit against the pillar on the Beuel side. The wires between the barges and the pusher tug broke. The crew of the barge managed to anchor. The barges which had broken lose were then taken alongside. Later the "Marconi" was able to continue its voyage towards the Swiss. On Dec 20 only little damage was found at the pillar which did not have to be repaired immediately.
