10 rescued from sinking ship

On Sep 19, 2016, at 2 p.m. the "Murat Hacibekiroglu 2", enroute from Iskenderun to Aslan Cemento, Darica, issued a distress signal via VHF. The ship had suffered water ingress in the engine room and was listing in pos. 36 06 N 031 34 E northwest of Cyprus, about 35 miles southwest of Alanya. The Turkish MRCC was unable to contact the vessel, and the nearby container ship "Electra A" was sent to the given position. The cargo ship was found in sinking condition down by the stern. The crew of 10 abandoned ship soon after and went into life boats. At 3.30 p.m. the vessel capsized and sank in the Marmara Sea. In 2008, the ship was arrested in Chioggia for four days due to the deficiencies. Two years ago she listed 45 degrees in the port of Ambarlı, and chemical-laden containers fell over board.
