Grounding in Zolotaya Bay
The "Vitim" ran aground in the Zolotaya Bay in the Strait of Tartary north off Primorye. The vessel lost propulsion power and was pushed onto a rocky shallow by the currents and winds. The hull suffered breaches below the waterline and ensuing water ingress. The engine compartment and ballast tanks were flooded. The accident was reported to the local authorities which dispatched three salvage tugs and divers to carry out underwater inspections and to assist with the refloating work. It was estimated that due to the damage the ship might have to be lightered before towing it off.
