Freighter removed from grounding site

On June 27, the 'Yusuf Celal' was removed from the grounding site at Balıkesir off Marmara Island Topağac neighborhood. The cargo of stone chips had been ligherered before. The wreck was removed by salvage teams after a week's work with the assistance of a floating crane and taken to a convenient site. The process of refloating commenced at the end of May. Salvage team had attended incident site upon completion of further approvals, and divers made further inspections. A detailed damage survey was in progress. Grounded freighter sank

The "Yusuf Celal" lost stability and capsized at its grounding site in the Topağac District of Balıkesir on March 14 at 6 p.m. Fuel and dirty oil leaks from the vessel were subsequently noted. The incident location was marked and restricted by authorities. Coastal Safety divers will carry out underwater inspection depending on the weather condition. The ship had sailed from Saraylar on March 13 at 2.30 p.m. bound to Ambarliwhen it grounded in position 40 36 02 N, 27 42 03 E, experienced structural failures and water ingress. After it almost completely submerged with only the tip of the bow and the radar mast remaining visible, the "Türkeli Römorkörü" and "Kıyem 4" laid out oil booms at the sinking site.
