Irish trawler blocked after Brexit
The 'Northern Celt' has been blocked from entering waters around Rockall in the North Atlantic. She was boarded by the Marine Scotland patrol boat 'Jura' off Rockall on Jan 4, 2021. Its captain Adrian McClenaghan had requested clarification on the access rights granted by his licence to fish in UK waters. He was told he could no longer fish within 12 nautical miles of the eroded volcano as a result of Brexit. The Irish Department of Foreign Affairs said it is aware of the incident and has been in contact with UK and Scottish authorities. The lucrative seabed around Rockall, rich in oil and gas possibilities as well as fish, has been the subject of rival claims from Ireland, Iceland and Denmark (on behalf of the Danish Faroe Islands). A temporary licence was issued to the 'Northern Celt' to fish in UK waters, with the stipulation that as a EU Vessel, it is not authorised to fish within 12 nautical miles of Rockall.
Grounding off Donaghadee
The Donaghadee RNLI volunteer crew was paged by the Belfast Coastguard on June 23, 2018 at 7.32 p.m. after the "Northern Celt - SO 472" had run ashore on the north side of the ‘Perch’, located just of the Warren Road in Donaghadee. The all-weather lifeboat "Saxon" was on scene to the fishing vessel within five minutes. After consultation with the crew of five of the fishing vessel, and establishing that the boat had no damage, the crew of the lifeboat attached a towline to the stern of the fishing vessel to attempt to pull it off the rocks which was unsuccessful. The towline was then moved to the bow of the boat in another attempt to remove her from the rocks. With the assistance of the casualty vessel dropping its trawl doors to the seabed to jettison some weight, using both their bow thrusters and main propulsion to assist, the vessel came free and the lifeboat was able to tow it to deep water. When the skipper of the "Northern Celt" was satisfied that there was no obvious damage to the hull or propeller the towline was removed and retrieved and the vessel continued her passage south while the lifeboat returned to station.
