Tug on fire in Sydney

Tue Oct 08 11:56:18 CEST 2019 Timsen

In the afternoon of Oct 4, 2019, a fire broke out in the bow of the 'Peggy McKenzie' which was undergoing repairs on land at the Vector Marine on Harbour Road in Sidney, CA. The crew was doing some welding up in the bow section, and some combustibles like survival suits and life jackets were left a little bit close or adjacent to the hot work, which resulted in a fire in the bow compartment of the vessel. The Sidney Volunteer Fire Department was alerted around 1 p.m. after the crews on board the tug failed to extinguish the fire. They had escaped from the vessel when firefighters arrived and later received treatment from ambulance crews for precautionary reasons. Two engines and 10 firefighters responded to the call, which lasted between 35 and 40 minutes. The fire was contained to its area of origin, so that there was no danger to any other vessels or the environment. The tug had on board fuel and other items such as paint and propane. The fire fighters managed to get there quickly, get some water on it, and then use some penetrating foam to suppress the fire in the little void spaces that they couldn’t immediately get to.
