Spirit of Resolution covered rescue of fishermen

Sun Dec 18 21:40:17 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Spirit of Resolution" was involved in the rescue of three people who finally have been winched to safety by a rescue helicopter after abandoning their fishing boat for a life raft in rough seas in South Taranaki early morning of Dec 18, 2011. The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand (RCCNZ) had received a Mayday call around 4.10 a.m. from a 17-m-fishing boat, advising that the boat was sinking, and the three people on board were getting into a life raft. The boat was around 8 nautical miles (14km) off Patea, south Taranaki. Communication with the boat’s occupants was lost shortly afterwards, and a distress beacon, which was briefly activated, also stopped signalling. RCCNZ tasked the Taranaki Rescue Helicopter, which arrived on scene just before 6 a.m. The helicopter crew sighted the life raft around 6.15 a.m. The rescue helicopter winched the crew to safety and was transporting them back to Taranaki Base Hospital for medical assessment. The nearby "Spirit of Resolution" was also tasked to the boat’s location, and arrived at the scene just after 6.30 a.m. The "Spirit of Resolution" remained on scene while the people were winched from the life raft, in case assistance was required.

SPIRIT OF RESOLUTION

Thu Feb 03 09:57:10 CET 2011 Timsen

The "Spirit of Resolution", 4766 dwt (IMO: 9139127), ran aground in Manukau off Kauri Point, West Auckland, on Feb 3, 2011, 11 a.m. Following a power failure it hit a mudbank in the Wairopa Channel inside the harbour. The tug "Rupe" was called in to assist, and it was freed some time later and taken to the nearby Big Bay on the North Manukau Head to be assessed for damaged. The company believes an electrical fault is to blame. The ship would try to cross the harbour again on the high tide at 11 p.m.
