Passenger ferry service thwarted by adverse weather, power outages

The new ferry service between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland by the Ä'Spuhels' and 'Sthuqi' was cancelled due to strong winds on Aug 14, 2023. All eight scheduled sailings on day one of operations were cancelled following city-wide power outages late on Aug 12 in Nanaimo with warnings from Environment Canada predicting gale force winds. Refunds were being processed for those who had reservations. In the evening of Aug 14, operator Hullo announced it had cancelled all sailings scheduled for Aug 15, too, anticipating sailings to begin in earnest on Aug 16, operating on a revised schedule for the rest of the month. The first and last sailings will be cut, with the service departing Nanaimo at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. and departing Vancouver at noon and 6:30 p.m.
