Cosco’s bulk carrier Shao Shan 5 spilled several tons of fuel in Santos Port

Wed Aug 03 09:14:56 CEST 2016 arnekiel

he Cosco’s bulk carrier Shao Shan 5 spilled several tons of heavy fuel during bunkering operation at Santos Port in Brazil. The vessel was taking fuel from the terminal, when the hose disconnected and unknown quantity of bunkering oil spilled on the deck and leaked in the water. The leak spread around the area of berthing and reached Santos Channel. The local and port authorities took immediate actions to restrict the oil spot, but the strong current and winds drifted it down the channel and leaks reached the shore. The affected areas were secured by oil booms and cleansing was started. Several rescue boats equipped with water cleaning equipment were dispatched to assist the local authorities in treatment of environmental pollution. An unknown volume of fuel was spilled on bulk carrier’s deck, but later was collected by absorbent blankets. The local authorities started investigation for the responsible of the water pollution and oil spill. The ship will be detained until further clearance of the accident. The traffic in the port and Santos Channel was affected by the accident, but not blocked. The bulk carrier Shao Shan 5 (IMO: 9500302) has overall length of 225.00 m, moulded beam of 32.50 m and maximum draft of 12.00 m. The deadweight of the vessel is 75,700 DWT and the gross tonnage is 41,342 GRT. The ship was built in 2012 by Huangpu Shipbuilding in Guangzhou, China. The bulk carrier Shao Shan 5 is owned and operated by Chinese shipping giant Cosco. http://www.maritimeherald.com/2016/coscos-bulk-carrier-shao-shan-5-spilled-fuel-in-santos-port/
