Plans for A$2.6 billion Australian coal terminal rejected
Argus Media Plans reports that plans by Australian coal entrepreneur Nathan Tinkler to build a A$2.5 billion (US$2.65 billion), 100 million tonnes/year coal terminal at Newcastle, New South Wales (NSW) have been rejected by the state government. The NSW government said the proposed site at Mayfield is more suited for containers and general cargo than for coal, rejecting plans by Tinkler's Hunter Ports that had included dredging the Hunter River. Argus Media said the government instead backed plans by the BHP Billiton-backed Newcastle Coal Infrastructure Group (NCIG) and Port Waratah Coal Services (PWCS) to expand their coal terminals at the existing Newcastle port.
