Dredging resumes at Azhikkal port channel

Mon Jun 18 09:32:28 CEST 2018 arnekiel

The stalled mechanical dredging of the Azhikkal Port channel here has resumed nearly a year after the much-awaited dredging work formally got under way in August last year when Ports Minister Kadannappally Ramachandran flagged off the operation of the cutter-suction dredger, CSD Chandragiri. The operation of the dredger was to have begun after its formal inauguration nearly two years after it was brought here with much fanfare. It took another 10 months for the actual dredging to increase the depth of the basin and the channel to begin. The plan is to increase the depth of the channel by six metres for the full-fledged launch of coastal shipping services and cargo shipping to Lakshwadweep from here.

Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping Pon Radhakrishnan has said that Azhikal port here will be included in the Sagarmala project of the Central government. Addressing a seminar on “Development of Azhikal Port and National Highways of North Malabar” organised by the North Malabar Chamber of Commerce (NMCC) here on Monday, he said that the Central government plans to develop all the minor and major ports in the country. He said that 200 minor ports and 12 major ports would be developed under the Sagarmala project. Mr. Radhakrishnan earlier visited the Azhikal port and evaluated its developmental needs. He said that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government was interested in carrying out works for developing bypasses in the State. Earlier, he had formally inaugurated the Light House Heritage Museum here. Source: The Hindu

Shipping service from Azhikkal port halted

Wed Jul 22 10:45:11 CEST 2015 arnekiel

he coastal shipping service from Azhikkal port here, which began in October 2014, has come to a standstill. Though the ports department expects its own crane to be installed here in the coming days and the reach stacker to make easy the handling of intermodal cargo containers has already been installed, there is confusion among the officials over the resumption of the service or the future prospects of developing it as a major port. It was nearly two months ago that the Great Sea Vembanad, by a shipping company in Kochi, had its last operation and after that no service was there. According to officials, the service has been temporarily stopped due to monsoon and the service would resume in September.
