First vessel sails from Port of Baton Rouge new Drax Biomass' facility
On April 7, the first vessel sailed away from Drax Biomass’ Baton Rouge port facilities to the Port of Tyne located on the U.K.’s East Coast. The MV TBC Princess was loaded with pellets from Drax Biomass’ southern pellet mills for power generation. Drax Biomass spent about 15 months building the port facilities to handle and ship pellets from the company’s two 450,000 metric-ton-per-year plants; Amite BioEnergy in Gloster, Mississippi, and Morehouse BioEnergy in Morehouse Parish, Louisiana, as well as pellets from suppliers other than Drax. These facilities have amounted to an overall investment of a $350 million for the company, and are expected to put 200 people to work by 2016.
Tenaska and Waller Marine to Build Louisiana’s First LNG Fueling Facility
Tenaska NG Fuels, LLC and Waller Marine, Inc. have announced an agreement to develop, construct, own and operate Louisiana’s first natural gas liquefaction and fueling facility along the New Orleans-Baton Rouge Mississippi River corridor with access to the Gulf of Mexico. Located on approximately 80 acres at the Port of Greater Baton Rouge, Tenaska Bayou LNG will provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) and compressed natural gas (CNG) as alternative clean-burning fuels for the high-horsepower marine, transportation, and natural gas and oil exploration and production industries in the region.
Mississippi River dredging project moves forward
U.S. Sen. David Vitter, top Republican on the Environment and Public Works Committee, which has jurisdiction over the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, recently announced his confidence that the deepening of the Mississippi River Ship Channel - Baton Rouge to the Gulf project is moving forward. “This project has been stuck in the mud for too long,” Vitter said. “The Mississippi River is far too important for our nation’s commerce to see long delays with deepening projects like this - delays which only serve to hurt job growth and our global competitiveness.” The Army Corps of Engineers has the necessary funding to move forward on the study, Vitter said. Once the study is completed, the project can be deepened to 50 feet. That part of the Mississippi River is currently 45 feet deep. Funds for this study were not allocated in the initial Corps Spend Plan for 2014 but Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works Jo-Ellen Darcy sent a transmittal letter to Congress for the allocation of $50,000 to begin initial work on the study.
