Fire threatened seismic vessel - No serious injuries

Mon Oct 10 15:58:38 CEST 2011 arnekiel

Emergency crews scrambled Sunday night after fire broke out in the accommodation section of a Russian seismic vessel 70 nautical miles northwest of Ørlandet on the coast of Sør-Trøndelag. The vessel had 40 persons on board. Two Sea King helicopters from Ørlandet and Florø and crews from Vigra and Heidrun responded to the alarm from the vessel Akademik Lazarev. Several other vessels in the area also headed for the scene and the fire was extinguished shortly after midnight, reported Norwegian Broadcasting (NRK). There were no serious injuries despite rough conditions at sea including gales and six-meter-high seas. “The vessel is somewhat damaged and the bridge may not be intact,” Ola Waage of the Sola rescue center told NRK. “Some cabins are also burned out.” The vessel, built in 1987, is under Russian flag and owned by a seismic firm based in Murmansk, according to NRK. The incident “went much better than feared,” Waage said, adding that a tugboat from Kristiansund was on its way to the vessel’s location Monday morning, to tow the ship in for repairs.
