Cargo ship sank after collision - one dead

Wed Jul 22 09:50:35 CEST 2015 Timsen

On July 22, 2015, at 02.26 a.m. the "Akel", being enroute from Kartal to Istanbul carrying a cargo of sand, was in collision with the Turkish dry cargo ship "Sengul K", 498 gt (IMO-No.: 7946863), off Riva at Turkish Black Sea coast west of the Bosphorus entrance. The ship sank shortly after collision in pos. 41.13 N, 29 16 E. The "Kıyem 2", "Kıyı Emniyeti 8", "Kıyı 4" and the tug "Kurtarma 10" particiopated in an SAR operation. Eight crew members were rescued alive, one was missing and could only be recovered dead by the "Kıyı 4" at 6.15 a.m. The body was transferred to shore and handed over to Coast Guard crews. At 6.25 a.m. the SAR operation had ended. The accident happened in good visibility and moderate sea, when the general cargo vessel was leaving the channel. The reason for collision is a mistake of the duty officer on the "Sengul K", who made a last minute maneuver. The "Sengul K" suffered slight damages of the bow and was anchored at safe position in the vicinity of the accident.
