Container ship rescued 109 migrants
In the early hours of Dec 28, 2025,, the Port Authorities of Paleochora, Kala Limeni, Kokkinos Pyrgos, Agia Galini and Gavdos were informed by the Unified SAR Coordination Center (EKSED) of the Greek Coastguard to provide assistance to a vessel with migrants on board, about 45 nautical miles south of Gavdos. The nearest ship was the 'Al Murabba', which went to the scene and picked up 109 boat people. They were transported outside the port of Paleochora. Subsequently, the were transferred to two patrol boats and safely transported to the port, from where they were taken to a hospitality area in Agia Chania. A preliminary investigation was being conducted by the Central Port Authority of Chania.
