Fog and inadequate speed contributed to allision

Thu Jan 26 11:27:30 CET 2017 Timsen

The allision of the "Antero De Quental" with the wharf at Terreiro do Paço on Jan 25 injured 37 people. The accident was caused by excessive speed in combination with the dense fog in Lisbon. The Port captain admitted that the ferry did not navigate at the most adequate speed. Of the 37 injured , 22 were taken to the hospitals of São José, São Francisco Xavier and Santa Maria. A woman was sent to the Alfredo da Costa maternity ward because she was pregnant for 19 weeks. The woman was okay according to the Hospital de São José. All victims were slightly injured, except one man with a fracture in a lower limb. The injured were standing near the exit zone and ready to disembark and fell due to the impact. Passengers were informed that they should not get up before the ship has docked. On the whole 565 people, including four crew members, were on board. 33 injured in allision in Lisbon

Wed Jan 25 11:31:52 CET 2017 Timsen

The "Antero de Quental" (IMO: 9312638) crashed into the dock at Terreiro do Paço in Lisbon when it was making maneuvers to dock at the quay of Terreiro do Paço upon its arrival from the south river bank on Jan 25, 2017, at 8.39 a.m. The catamaran was serving the route crossing the Tagus river between Barreiro and Terreiro do Paço. 33 passengers were injured. Medical teams were assisting the injured on and outside the catamaran. 22 have been transported to the hospital, 12 to San José, eight to Santa Maria and two to San Francisco Xavier. On board were 561 passengers and four crew members. At the time of the accident there was poor visibility due to the fog. The Maritime Police and firefighters were on scene too, and the police established an exclision zone for the rescue operations. Also a team of divers from Sapadores responded to the emergency call, to see if anyone had fallen into the river or if there was a breach in the hull of the ferry, which was not the case. The operator Soflusa announced that a commission will be established to investigate the accident.
