Fish carrier ran aground
The "Viking Caledonia" with a crew of five and a cargo of 60 tions of live fish on board ran aground in pos. 56 51 12.0 N, 005 42 48.0 W at Loch Ailort, south of Mallaig, on July 27, 2019, at 3.45 p.m. No pollution has been reported. The Mallaig RNLI lifeboat attended at the scene upon request of the Stornoway Coastguard, while the supply tug "Annie E" was enroute to the grounding site where it arrived around 8.30 p.m. On July 28 at 1.25 a.m. the fish carrier was refloated by the "Annie E". The casualty vessel then left Loch Ailort and proceeded on its intended passage to Mallaig with an ETA as of 04.40 a.m. The vessel has arranged an underwater inspection of the hull in Mallaig on the afternoon of July 29.
Engine failure off Mallaig
The "Viking Caledonia", en route from Larne to Mallaig, suffered a main engine failure and went adrift in position 056 51 54.0 N, 005 56 24.0 W, 10 miles south-southwest of Mallaig harbour, on July 17, 2019 at 9 p.m. The problem might have been due to a broken turbo charger which led to the main engine failure. The Mallaig RNLI lifeboat took the vessel under tow to Mallaig Harbour where it was safely berthed on July 18 at 1.15 a.m.
