Yard evacuated after ship fire

Sat Sep 09 15:35:14 CEST 2017 Timsen

On Sep 8, 2017, at 11.30 a.m. a fire broke out on the "Arctic Wolf" which was docked at a shipyard in Havøysund. The ship owner himself, Steve Arntzen from Napp in Lofoten, discovered the fire in the morning. He had his ship at the yard since June for modernizations, and the works should be completed by the end of September. Arntzen was on the deck and painted as he saw smoke coming from a door from the accomodation block to the main deck. He climbed off the vessel to cool the hull with a water hose, but quickly had to flee due to the fierce smoke and raised alarm. The entire industrial area had to be evacuated because of the strong smoke development and danger of explosion. Residents were asked to keep windows and doors closed. The fire extinguishing work was very difficult. Gas bottles for welding works were stored in the immediate vicinity of the ship. The rescue boat "Odin" of the NSSR which had been 400 meters away from the yard when the fire broke out, assisted in fire fighting from the sea side. The fire brigade had to work with special equipment in the narrow spaces on board and used special steel cutting equipment to access the fire. A total of 21 men and five fire trucks from Hammerfest, Måsøy and Kvalsund were on site. It was not until evening that the fire, which did not encroach upon the buildings of the shipyard, was borught under control.
